Bernholz joins the CM Roster!

“Madonna-quoting brilliance” THE SUNDAY TIMES

“Brave and poppy” GOD IS IN THE TV

“…has the ability to deliver something great” CMU

“Class.” TOM ROBINSON – BBC 6MUSIC

Bernholz is musician, sculptor and filmmaker Jez Bernholz, who composes, performs and produces experimental pop using a combination of 4 track, casio synths, digital samplers and sequencers. The
critical response to his ‘Madonna quoting’ debut single ‘Austerity Boy’ (Anti-Ghost Moon Ray, 2012), established a promising first impression in UK press and radio, with support from BBC 6Music (Tom Robinson), BBC Introducing (Simon Price), and select tastemakers 20 Jazz Funk Greats.

Two years in the making, Bernholz’s debut album, How Things Are Made is now complete. Written in part as homage to legendary concept LPs such as Hounds of Love (Kate Bush, 1985), Low (David Bowie, 1977), and Big Science (Laurie Anderson, 1982); How Things Are Made is a cyclic suite of delicately layered cinematic soundscapes, contrasted against bold and fiercely catchy pop songs.

Co-released physically on CD on 29th September by Bernholz’s co-run label Anti-Ghost Moon Ray (alongside Gazelle Twin, Acquaintance, Great Pagans) & Cupboard Music, the album will be supported by European tour this Autumn supporting Gazelle Twin, beginning with an Anti-Ghost Moon Ray event, SPECTRUM, at the Dome Studio in Brighton on 26th September & Corsica Studios, London, 1st October..

Speak Galactic – ‘Severed’ (24/09/2012) + ‘Precautionary Measures’ (NOW)

SPEAK GALACTIC – ‘SEVERED’
Limited (300) 180gm Frosted Clear Vinyl LP + Download

The product of two years of intense gigging, Severed is the true debut album by Brighton duo Speak Galactic (Owen Thomas & Jim Morrison).

Originally formed as a solo venture by Owen whilst living in Gothenburg, Sweden, Speak Galactic began life as an album of bedroom recordings entitled ‘When The Sea Water Reaches The Window’, finished and self-released before a single live show had been performed.

Upon his return to the UK, Speak Galactic fast gained a small army of admirers, early live shows including support slots to the likes of Future Islands, Casiotone For The Painfully Alone and Jeniferever.

It was during this time work began on this, first album ‘proper’ Severed, and the addition of live drummer Jim further focused the live experience, adding a vital organic element and excitement to performances which ultimately fed back into the developing songs. Support slots with the likes of Laetitia Sadier (Stereolab), Yeti Lane and Ensemble Economique have followed with consistently high praise.

To talk of a genre for the music, many have compared them to the likes of Atlas Sound and Animal Collective, describing them as ‘ambient noise-pop’. This isn’t fully accurate however as they can fit into any number of genres as elements of post-rock, dream-pop and indie rock are prevalent throughout.

The songs on Severed explode with lush electronics and pound with energy, constantly grasping your attention in a vice-like grip until Side B’s 17-minute closer ‘Solar Sail’, which feels more personal and contemplative, an ambient event in itself which flows layers of noise alongside a gentle synthesised overlay.

Ahead of the release, we’re happy to release the digital single ‘Precautionary Measures’, featuring the title track and exclusive non-album B-Side ‘Bright Tunnels’.

“a must see for fans of ambient / noise / fucked up pop. A boiling brew of electronics, ghostly voices andpounding drums” – Nature Scene Records feature

“Support band, Brighton’s Speak Galactic impressed me greatly. Progressive (not always a dirty word)and original, they at times blew me away, reminding me of Bradford Cox’s Deerhunter and Atlas Sound attheir most experimental” - Brighton Noise review, Yeti Lane support slot

“Speak Galactic is the pseudonym of Brighton’s Owen Thomas, who assembles thick layers of lo-fi homerecordings into fuzzy, otherworldy collages. Live, Thomas rebuilds his tunes with an arsenal of overdrivenkeyboards and guitar, revealing some of the songcraft that lies beneath.” – Brighton Source The GreatEscape preview

“If this guy isn’t a superstar in the next twelve months, then there’s something wrong with the world.” -Brighton Music Blog, One Inch Badge Sea Monsters 2 Festival review

Upcoming Dates:

15/09/12 – BRIGHTON - ‘SEVERED’ ALBUM LAUNCH @ FITZHERBERTS (w/Us Baby Bear Bones / Plurals / Cupboard Music (DJ) / More) – £FREE

We’ve Been Naughty

Hello you lot,

Yep – it’s been some time since we posted an update on this bit. We’ve been keeping the right sidebar with listings on up-to-date and the gigs page sort of up-to-date but yeah, the front of the website, THIS BIT has been somewhat neglected. And for that I can apologise.

So what’ve we been up to? Well, we’ve been booking some great things for you all to come to! This is the bit where I spam some videos for you to have a look at because I’m rubbish at descriptions. Anyway, in addition to those shows mentioned in previous posts that’re still to come (well, the one we previously mentioned: Roddy Woomble, Boat to Row and Lee Clayden at The Haunt on Saturday 10th March), we have the following:

Thursday 8th March – Johnny Foreigner / We Are The Physics / Love Among The Mannequins / Joanna Gruesome – The Green Door Store – £6adv

Wednesday 11th April – Delta Sleep / Speak Galactic / The Physics House Band / The Righteous Ones of the Blazing Rockets – Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar – £4adv

Delta Sleep – So Say We All from Devin Yüceil on Vimeo.

Sunday 6th May – Stanley Brinks (André Herman Dune) and the Flying Kaniks featuring Freschard – The Green Door Store – £7adv

Tuesday 8th May – Olympians / Kutosis / Holland - Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar – £5adv

OLYMPIANS // THE GREAT GATSBY from Olympians on Vimeo.

Kutosis: Skin from Tom Betts on Vimeo.

Thursday 17th May – The Primitives – The Haunt – £10adv

Monday 21st May – Ice, Sea, Dead People / Kellar – The Prince Albert – £5adv

Right, that’s all of them for now. Enjoy, and come along! I’ll update more often from now on, promise!

Noel.

Laetitia Sadier! Roddy Woomble! Cor, 2012!

Hey all, super exciting news for you with two brand new shows planned for the first bit of 2012.

First off, we’re delighted to welcome the amazing LAETITIA SADIER (of course from Stereolab) to play a show at The Green Door Store! We can’t really believe our luck on this one and it should be asilly-good night. It’s on January 13th, tickets are just £7.00 and opening the show will be SPEAK GALACTIC, who basically jumped when we asked “how would you like to support..?”. It was very sweet, but quite right too as it basically can’t fail to be That Good.

Secondly, the other massive news we have is our biggest show to date! Touring his new solo album ‘The Impossible Song & Other Songs’, we welcome Idlewild frontman RODDY WOOMBLE to The Haunt on Saturday10th March. Support will come from a lovely bunch from the midlands called BOAT TO ROW, who we’ve liked for quite some time ever since the lovely zine ‘Risk & Consequence’ ran a feature on them in their debut issue. This show is £13 in advance and doors will be at 7pm.

Here’s a video from Roddy’s new album, it’s really very good.

Tickets are on sale for both of these shows right now and will probably fly out, so run along to Resident, Rounder and Ape or pick one up online from WeGotTickets.com NOW!

Additions and New Shows and Releases and Goodness

Alrighty all? Hope so, for there is plenty news for you all to absorb.

First up, additions to bills: Next Saturday (22nd), LEE CLAYDEN will be opening up the Singing Adams show at Sticky Mikes. He’s fantastic and there’s a bit more news about him further down that we’re dead excited about.

Then on Saturday 12th November, HOCKEYSMITH and TWO JACKALS (until the other day called simply ‘Jackals’ but had to change due to another band with the same name) will be joining us for the Tyrannosaurus Dead EP Launch at Fitzherberts.

And THEN on Wednesday 16th November, KELLAR will be performing their debut gig opening for Kutosis & Samoans at The Hope! Fantastic!

And finally with the additions, way off on Saturday 21st January the lovely MODEL VILLAGE will be opening for Standard Fare & Tyrannosaurus Dead at the Green Door Store.

Secondly, a NEW GIG! On Sunday 27th November we have LOVE AMONG THE MANNEQUINS (featuring members of Meet Me In St Louis, Shield Your Eyes, O You Broken Eyes and Crooked Mountain Crooked Sea) and TANGLED HAIR coming down to play at the Prince Albert, which should be just lovely. Tickets for that one will be £5 in advance or £6 on the door.

Thirdly, and properly finally for this post – we’re dead happy to be putting out the debut solo album by Lee Clayden (mentioned before). It should be available for your consumption at the end of January or so next year, but for now we’ve uploaded some tracks and a video to his Facebook BandPage. We have loads of faith in Lee as he’s such a massive talent, and we’re very excited to be releasing this!

And that’s it. Quite a lengthy posting from me there, I hope you stuck to the end as it’s all great news. See you next time!

New Gig Announcements!

Two new great shows to tell you all about now, cor! First up, we’re hosting a release party for the upcoming debut EP we’re putting out by Tyrannosaurus Dead and we’re very excited about it – it’ll be our very first entirely FREE show and will be at Fitzherberts on New Road (next to the Mash Tun and opposite the Unitarian Church, where the following afternoon will be the Darren Hayman piano show!)

Copies of the EP will be available at the show for the low, low price of £3! Bargain! Have a listen to it on the embedded soundcloud player in the previous post on here – it’s great. ALSO, we’re putting on the very magnificent Cardiff bands KUTOSIS and SAMOANS on Wednesday 16th November at The Hope! They’re touring together in support of the brand new debut Kutosis album (out November through Barely Regal Records) and should both be great.

We discovered Kutosis through our friends at Basement Fever some time ago and are eternally grateful, they’re just brilliant. And to prove it, here are a couple of clips – one a music video and the other a live vid from Reading & Leeds in 2009.

Standard Fare!

Cor, this news stuff is coming Thick And Fast lately, eh? Today’s newbie is confirmation of a gig with the lovely Standard Fare headlining. It’s way off in January but tickets will be on sale soon anyway.

Support will come from our favourite Brighton bunch of ragamuffins Tyrannosaurus Dead, who anyone who’s been on this site before will know already. It’s all very exciting.

If you don’t know Standard Fare, they’re a great fun indie-pop bunch and have been doing really well over the past year or so, playing festivals such as Latitude, Indietracks, In the City and SWN and have gone on two US tours, including playing at SXSW in Austin, TX.

Additionally their single ‘Philadelphia’ topped the Dandelion Radio Festive Fifty vote for 2010. I was going to post the great video they made for it on here now but for some reason it’s not viewable in this country? Sounds wrong to me as I’ve definitely watched it before (and didn’t go somewhere else to do it) but never mind – here’s a clip of them performing it at SXSW last March:

In case you’ve somehow missed Tyrannosaurus Dead, you can have a listen to their debut EP (due out on Cupboard Music in October) right below here! Good, eh?

But yeah, as they say, until ‘then’. It’s gonna be good.

Gushing Thanks, plus DARREN HAYMAN!

Right, so I’m going to quickly get this out of the way – THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR COMING TO JEFFREY LEWIS & THE JUNKYARD ON MONDAY. Cool, that should just about do it. Well, not really I suppose. I honestly can’t thank you all enough for coming, being lovely even though I listed the door time on WeGotTickets wrong and making it one of the best nights we at CM have ever put on. If you left just after the gig, you’ll have missed Jeff doing a drawing on the side of the upstairs bar a little later on – it’s still there but here’s a picture anyway:

But yes, thanks for that. I have NEWS on top of all that gushing though. And it’s good. It’s REALLY good.

I am delighted to announce that DARREN HAYMAN (of legendary Peel-faves HEFNER) will be performing an afternoon solo piano show for us at Brighton Unitarian Church (opposite the Mash Tun & Fitzherberts) on Sunday 13th November (just before my birthday – nice!) in support of his upcoming new album ‘The Ship’s Piano’. Doors will be at 2pm and as there will be little/no amplification in the venue we’d ask you to arrive on time so as to not disturb the performance.

And it doesn’t even end there. Support on the day will come from Darren’s former Hefner bandmate JACK HAYTER!

Exciting times for sure, tickets will be £9 in advance from Resident, Rounder, Ape and WeGotTickets.com and they should be on sale by Friday afternoon. If there are any left on the door, they’ll be £10. I hope to see you there!

Lots of News!

Hey, it’s news-o’clock here at CM… I hope you’re ready.

First off, online tickets for the Jeffrey Lewis & The Junkyard have SOLD OUT. Completely. So much so that we moved stock around and ended up selling double the amount online than we had originally planned – how about that? There are still a few tickets left in Rounder, Resident and Ape though so go and snap them up!

Secondly, we’ve confirmed another gig for October! CM favourites ICE, SEA, DEAD PEOPLE will be paying us a visit for a headline show at the Green Door Store on Wednesday 12th October. We put them on in London a couple of years ago and since then have released their debut album (cover above) and played loads of shows. They’re one of the most ferocious live bands I’ve ever seen and they should be great (and LOUD) at a venue like the GDS. Get your tickets sas soon as they go on sale!

THIRDLY (told you there was lots of news), Brighton/London-based alt-rock chums TYRANNOSAURUS DEAD have just recorded their debut EP and we’ll be putting it out! This will be our first new release since the relocation to Brighton and we couldn’t be happier. Finding the middle ground between US rock luminaries Dinosaur Jr and the jangly joy of the C86 bands, T-Dead have only been together six months but in that time have made loads of friends and written some killer tunes. The EP was recorded at Transmission Studios by Ali (who also recorded CM-faves Caledonians‘ debut EP ‘EP One’ earlier this year) along with Chris Lowe of The Valentines and it sounds really quite great if I do say so myself. You can have a listen to it for now on their blog here and it’ll be available to buy very soon from some record stores, gigs and this very website’s shop.
