Speak Galactic – ‘Severed’ (24/09/2012) + ‘Precautionary Measures’ (NOW)

SPEAK GALACTIC – ‘SEVERED’
Limited (300) 180gm Frosted Clear Vinyl LP + Download

The product of two years of intense gigging, Severed is the true debut album by Brighton duo Speak Galactic (Owen Thomas & Jim Morrison).

Originally formed as a solo venture by Owen whilst living in Gothenburg, Sweden, Speak Galactic began life as an album of bedroom recordings entitled ‘When The Sea Water Reaches The Window’, finished and self-released before a single live show had been performed.

Upon his return to the UK, Speak Galactic fast gained a small army of admirers, early live shows including support slots to the likes of Future Islands, Casiotone For The Painfully Alone and Jeniferever.

It was during this time work began on this, first album ‘proper’ Severed, and the addition of live drummer Jim further focused the live experience, adding a vital organic element and excitement to performances which ultimately fed back into the developing songs. Support slots with the likes of Laetitia Sadier (Stereolab), Yeti Lane and Ensemble Economique have followed with consistently high praise.

To talk of a genre for the music, many have compared them to the likes of Atlas Sound and Animal Collective, describing them as ‘ambient noise-pop’. This isn’t fully accurate however as they can fit into any number of genres as elements of post-rock, dream-pop and indie rock are prevalent throughout.

The songs on Severed explode with lush electronics and pound with energy, constantly grasping your attention in a vice-like grip until Side B’s 17-minute closer ‘Solar Sail’, which feels more personal and contemplative, an ambient event in itself which flows layers of noise alongside a gentle synthesised overlay.

Ahead of the release, we’re happy to release the digital single ‘Precautionary Measures’, featuring the title track and exclusive non-album B-Side ‘Bright Tunnels’.

“a must see for fans of ambient / noise / fucked up pop. A boiling brew of electronics, ghostly voices andpounding drums” – Nature Scene Records feature

“Support band, Brighton’s Speak Galactic impressed me greatly. Progressive (not always a dirty word)and original, they at times blew me away, reminding me of Bradford Cox’s Deerhunter and Atlas Sound attheir most experimental” - Brighton Noise review, Yeti Lane support slot

“Speak Galactic is the pseudonym of Brighton’s Owen Thomas, who assembles thick layers of lo-fi homerecordings into fuzzy, otherworldy collages. Live, Thomas rebuilds his tunes with an arsenal of overdrivenkeyboards and guitar, revealing some of the songcraft that lies beneath.” – Brighton Source The GreatEscape preview

“If this guy isn’t a superstar in the next twelve months, then there’s something wrong with the world.” -Brighton Music Blog, One Inch Badge Sea Monsters 2 Festival review
